The second annual charity kickball game between Harvey County Fire versus Harvey County Law Enforcement will be another epic, fun filled night. Last year the Harvey County Fire squad "handcuffed" their opposition 7-4, leaving the law enforcement team feeling "blue"! Who will come out on top this year and will the competition be red hot or will the night be a cool blue?
This game will be completive and hilarious. There will be walk up music, special inning rules, and guest MC's. The night will also have events between innings for every age of fan, from little ones to adults.
The night will “kick off” with an Army National Guard Color Guard and the national Anthem being sung live by Newton High School Choir students. After the game there will be a live country concert and fireworks!
Friday Night Lightz will follow the Battle of the Badgez as we roll out the hay trailer stage to the infield and continue the evening with some great country music performed by the duo of Jacob Reavis & Samantha Melillo (from the Annie Up Band).
Listen, twirl and dance with the grass under your feet, to old and new country music as the evening moves toward dusk. As the dark descends upon us we will begin the professional fire work show over Sand Creek, beyond the outfield of Kelsch Field.

Every year the Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival commissions a local artist to create a 4’x8′ mural that holds true to the spirit of the Newton community, the surrounding area or the festival theme. Anyone can watch as the artist paints their composition on the largest easel in Newton. All six of the previous years’ murals will be on display in a separate tent to view and enjoy as well.
The 2025 Sand Creek Summer Daze Mural Artist is Virgil Penner. Virgil is known for his ink drawings of homes and buildings, with an architectural perspective. Since retirement he has focused on acrylic landscape paintings. Virgil studied art at Newton High School under Marie Orr for four years. After college he taught and coached in Wichita High Schools and at Bethel College.
Since retirement in 2009 as CEO of the Newton Chamber of Commerce, he has resumed acrylic painting. His paintings are colorful and bright. You will see various styles developing as he continues to refine techniques in his paintings, with a style not as you would see in reality, but with an air of whimsy..

The Hard Redz Summer Brew-off is a great way to celebrate the Craft Brewing and Wheat Heritage in Kansas. The Hard Redz Summer Brew-off connects craft brewing to Newton’s economic roots in wheat-growing. The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival and local home brewers have partnered to create an event that explores these two industries.
Brewing often uses a type of wheat called soft, white, spring wheat – it is planted in the spring. But Kansas is known for its hard, red, winter wheat. It is planted in the fall but gets its name from lying dormant through the winter. It has more tannins in the kernel and delivers a more robust, earthy, complex flavor profile. Mennonite immigrants presented this to America in the heart of Kansas!
Home brewers will set up tents to display their craftmanship and recipes. Pro brewers and Grace Hill Winery will be there as well serving their favorites. We invite you to sample and judge home brewing at it’s finest and meet local and surrounding communities’ craft brewers.
